5 Signs You're Wearing the Wrong Bra Size

Proper bra fitting guide

Studies estimate that up to 80% of women wear the wrong bra size. An ill-fitting bra doesn't just look wrong — it can cause back pain, shoulder grooves, skin irritation, and poor posture. Here are the five most common signs that your bra isn't quite right, and what to do about it.

1. The Band Rides Up Your Back

Your bra band should sit level and straight across your back, parallel to the ground. If it's riding up — even slightly — the band is too large. Remember: 80% of a bra's support comes from the band, not the straps.

The fix: Go down a band size. If you're wearing a 36, try a 34. You may need to go up a cup size to compensate (this is called "sister sizing"). A properly fitting band should feel snug but comfortable — you should be able to fit two fingers underneath.

2. The Straps Dig In or Slip Off

If your straps are constantly falling off your shoulders, or if they're leaving red marks and grooves, something is off. Straps should stay in place without being overtightened.

The fix: If straps fall off, your band is likely too large (causing the whole bra to shift). If straps dig in, you're probably relying on them for too much support — tighten the band and see if that helps. Some women have narrower or wider-set shoulders, so look for bras with adjustable strap placement.

Quick Test: Slip both bra straps off your shoulders. If the bra stays in place held only by the band, you have a good fit. If it drops, the band is too loose.

3. You Spill Over or Have Gaps in the Cups

"Quad-boob" (tissue spilling over the top of the cup) means your cup is too small. Conversely, wrinkled or gaping cups mean the cup is too large. The cup should contain all breast tissue smoothly, including the tissue near your underarms.

The fix: For spillover, go up one cup size. For gaps, go down one cup size. The center gore (the piece between the cups) should lie flat against your sternum — if it's floating, the cups are too small.

4. The Underwire Pokes or Sits on Tissue

An underwire should encircle all your breast tissue and sit flat against your ribcage. If it's sitting on breast tissue (especially near the underarms), pressing into your ribs, or poking out at the ends, the fit is wrong.

The fix: If the wire sits on breast tissue, try a larger cup or wider wire. If the wire presses into your ribs, the band or cup shape may not suit your body. Different brands have different wire shapes — finding the right brand for your body is as important as finding the right size.

5. You Constantly Adjust Throughout the Day

The ultimate test: if you forget you're wearing your bra, it fits. If you're constantly pulling, adjusting, lifting, or readjusting, something needs to change. A well-fitting bra should feel like a comfortable hug, not a battle.

The fix: Try a professional fitting, or use a size calculator like our interactive size guide. Sometimes the issue isn't the size but the style — different bra shapes work better for different breast shapes.
